Heart palpitations may mimic a heart attack. When you do not know the cause, it can be scary. People panic when they think it’s a heart attack. There are a number of reasons why heart palpitations occur.
Panic attacks
A panic attack can cause a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing and chest pain. These are all signs of a cardiac arrest. It is important to remember that not all palpitations are heart attacks. You should be on the lookout for symptoms of heart palpitations, such as shortness of breathe, chest pain, pain in the arm or leg, dizziness or fainting.
Hormones and pregnancy
Hormones are particularly affected by pregnancy. Anemia can also be a sign of pregnancy. Palpitations of this type can occur during menstruation and at any time.
Medicines
Certain medications, such as cold remedies, diet pills and other drugs, can either increase or decrease heart rate. In rare cases, medicines that treat regular arrhythmia of the heart can cause palpitations. Certain vitamins and supplements can cause palpitations if you are taking stimulant medications.
Food
Some people can be so sensitive to food that it will affect their heart rate, causing palpitations. Heart palpitations are caused by foods high in sodium, sugar, MSG, or fat. Keep a record of your diet to share with your doctor. This will help you to make a plan to prevent this.
High Intensity
Exercises that are high-intensity can increase your heart rate. Soccer and football are sports that require constant movement. When the palpitations start, note how long they last after the activity stops.
Arrhythmia can be a sign of a serious condition. You should go to the ER if you have had a previous heart attack. After performing tests to determine if there is a problem with your heart, your doctor will be able to tell you what’s going on.
Heart palpitations tests
Electrocardiograms, also known as EKGs, are tests that can be performed while lying down. You may also be sent for a chest radiograph to see what’s going on in your body. A chest x ray can detect fluid in the lungs which could indicate heart failure.
